Transforming a Downstairs Space with RSJ Installation
At Wall Away Ltd, we take great pride in being part of the renovation process, even if the final image isn’t always as polished as what you might see on Instagram. While the before and after pictures might not showcase the final aesthetic touches of a home renovation, we believe in showcasing the integral steps it takes to achieve a client’s vision – because the structural work is just as important as the finishing touches.
This project was no different. Our client in Hertfordshire wanted to open up their downstairs space and create a more vibrant living area. Their goal was to remove two windows and an outside wall, replacing them with bi-fold doors. To do so, we had to ensure that the structure would remain safe and stable throughout the transformation, which led to the installation of an RSJ (Rolled Steel Joist) for structural support.
Removing Windows and Lower Wall for Open-Plan Design
Our client's vision for the space was simple: transform their downstairs living area into a more light and vibrant environment where the outside and inside areas flowed seamlessly into each other. To achieve this, the existing windows and outside wall had to be removed to create space for bi-fold doors.
However, the structural opening challenge was not just in removing these elements, but in making sure that the building’s structural integrity remained intact. The wall and windows, while serving a decorative purpose, were also contributing to the structural stability of the house. Removing them without proper support could have led to significant issues, including sagging or even collapse.
Installing an RSJ for Structural Safety
To make sure the space could be opened up without compromising the home’s safety, we began by carefully assessing the existing structure. The decision was made to install a Rolled Steel Joist (RSJ) to bear the weight that was previously supported by the wall and windows.
An RSJ installation is a critical step in ensuring that the weight from the upper floors and roof is properly redistributed. By adding this steel beam, we were able to maintain the structural integrity of the building, allowing the space to be opened up without risk of instability.
The RSJ was carefully measured, fabricated, and installed in place of the removed wall, ensuring that it would carry the load in the most efficient way possible. While the process was quite simple in terms of the installation itself, the impact it had on the home was profound.
The Process: Before, During, and After
The images of this project tell the story of the transformation – from the initial before shots, to the during stage when the windows and wall were being removed, to the final after image where the space is ready for bi-fold door installation, creating an open and spacious living area.
While the final design is visually stunning, the process of getting there was equally important. Here’s a breakdown of the steps:
Before: The original space was an outside wall with two windows.
During: We carefully removed the two windows and outside wall, taking care to ensure the surrounding structure was properly supported as we worked. The RSJ was installed to redistribute the weight and provide the necessary structural support.
After: The final result was a wide, open space that flows seamlessly from the kitchen to await newly installed bi-fold doors, bringing in natural light and offering easy access to the outside.
